Mappa Mundi (World Map) by Giovanni LeardoJerusalem as the Center of the WorldThe quest to determine the true boundaries of the world intensified during the Renaissance, but maps of the 15th century still reflected the beliefs of the Middle Ages. Cartographers drew on a variety of ancient and contemporary sources. The Bible, for example, was of central importance in describing the Holy Land and environs. In the map drawn by the Italian artist Giovanni Leardo (Venice 1452-53), the world is disc-shaped, surrounded on all sides by water. Unlike modern maps, the top of this map is oriented to the east, rather than the north, consisting of Asia, Europe and Africa, the three known continents. These are, in turn, encircled by the ocean. At the center of the landmass is the holy city of Jerusalem, which Jewish and Christian traditions declared to be the physical and spiritual center of the entire world.The map is “oriented” with east and the Terrestrial Paradise at the top, Asia in the upper half, Europe at the lower left, and Africa to the right. The shapes of the Mediterranean Sea and of western Europe are surprisingly well drawn and easily recognizable, most likely being based on the portolan sea charts of the time. In addition to names derived from Ptolemy’s Geographia, the names, especially those related to eastern Europe, were supplemented by Marco Polo’s travel accounts.With the exception of the aptly colored Red Sea, the seas are uniformly blue. Land areas are the natural color of the bleached parchment except for a vivid red region in the far south bearing the inscription “Dixerto dexabitado per caldo” (desert uninhabited due to heat) and a drab brown waste in the far north marked “Dixerto dexabitado per fredo” (desert uninhabited due to cold).All of Leardo’s maps of the World have a similar feature — a series of rings surrounding the circular map and constituting an elaborate calendar. Winds blowing from the points of the compass are shown by eight faces around the edge of the central disk. The corners of the map are occupied by figures representing the four evangelists: the lion for St. Mark, the bull for St. Luke, the angel for St. Matthew and the eagle for St. John. Little is known about the 15th-century Venetian geographer and cosmographer Giovanni Leardo, beyond the fact that three of his world maps have survived from late-medieval times, signed by their creator.
