eBay From the personal collection of Sound Investments USA LLC Vintage Curly Maple Gustav Mollenhauer & Sohne Bassoon Gustav Mollenhauer & Sohne Vinbtage Bassoon Curly Maple in orig case This Bassoon was purchased from a collection of a band member of the old Johnny Carson band with Doc Severson. This musician collected only top end instruments from all over the world as he travelled, and I bought all of them. Some are already listed, and most are not. This is one I had for the last 12 years. While I am not a woodwinds person, I can only describe as my inspection and pictures and expert assessments show. The name on the case is where I was told this instrument was made and the name on the instrument is from the store and famous California shop it was made for: Baxter- Northrup Co. Los Angeles. While they are still in business and have been for over 108 years…they do not operate as they used to all those years ago and they have no info they could share with me. Below is some info I got from the manufacture’s web page about the manufacturer. Beautiful curly maple wood I believe and in excellent condition. The wood shows no splits, and the age is undetermined. The serial number shows in the pic as 1078 The nickel parts work well and freely. The engraving is Baxter- Northrup Co. Los Angeles ..the store it was made for Here is some info I collected about the store.. History of Baxter Northup Music store who branded this one Established in 1906, Baxter Northup is the oldest continuously operating music store in California. Originally located in downtown Los Angeles, first at 339 South Hill St. near Angel’s Flight (see below) and then at 837 South Olive St., the store moved to Ventura Blvd. in the 1950s and has been located at is present address since 1993. harry Baxter was a flutist, and believed that “love for music and the desire to offer the advantages of a musical education would lead not only to the betterment of the individual, but as well to the social, civic, and moral uplift of the community.” Harry Baxter was the proprietor of Baxter Northup from 1916 until 1941. Not much is known of Ray Northup. It is believed that he was more of a “silent partner”. Manufacturer information gathered. In 1822 Johann Andreas Mollenhauer founded his first workshop in Fulda, Germany, producing musical instruments for the royal court of Hessen and throughout Europe. In 1864 his son, Gustav, established his woodwind workshop in Kassel , “Gustav Mollenhauer & Söhne KG”. In the 1950’s the firm passed into the capable hands of Karl Schaub, and is now successfully managed by his son Gerhard and grandson Tino, both licensed master craftsmen, having completed their “Meisterprüfung”. Instruments from Gustav Mollenhauer & Söhne are played by artists around the world who rely on their quality and are enthusiastic about their even tone and intonation. In their Kassel workshop, Gerhard and Tino Schaub oversee the manufacture of each contrabassoon. with careful attention to fit and function. Select, mature, Curly Maple is turned and bored, then stained, varnished, and polished to a lustrous finish. Strong alloy, silver plated keys are fitted as the contrabassoon is assembled. Each low B-flat “opera model” contrabassoon includes two Mollenhauer bocals, hand crafted in the workshop.
