There were three patterns. The first was made in 1905-1906, the second was made in 1915-1918 and the third was made during WWII. They are typically blued. During 1933-1945 period, Germany used three different marking systems to identify manufacturers. From 1925-1940 a number code were used. From 1937-1940 commercial trademarks were used. From 1940-1945 letter codes were used. The markings have been scrubbed off this one. Overall, this bayonet is in Good – Very Good condition, considering its age and history. The press catch is functional with very stiff spring tension. Both the pommel and guard are securely fastened to the tang. They both have light scrapes, light oxidation and discoloration. The finish has turned a darker patina color. The flashguard has impact marks. The escutcheons securely fasten the grips. They have light tool marks with strong slots. The grip panels have light draglines and scrapes. The left panel is a lot darker than the right panel. They both have darkened with age. The spine, fullers and sides have light handling marks, but no other wear. The blade edge has no nicks or dings and appears to have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a sharp straight point. It retains its original finish. The only marking is on the spine, it looks like an “H”. The scabbard is in Good – Very Good Plus condition, considering its age and history. The frog stud is securely fastened to the body. The mouth, body and finial all have scattered scrapes and superficial oxidation. It retains its original finish. The scabbard has no visible markings. This bayonet and scabbard will be a great addition to your Mauser k98 rifle, or a bayonet collection in general. As with all used items, a light cleaning may be necessary to meet your standards.
