Today I have up for consideration a VINTAGE Fashion Manor – Fine China of Japan – Serving Vegetable Bowl . This piece is in the Rosay pattern. This piece is 2-5/8″ tall & 9-1/4″ in diameter at the rim. This piece has a White background with Pink Flowers with Blue & Green Leaves & Stems. There is a Blue & Pink border design around the rim & is Trimmed in Gold. This pattern was discontinued. The Backstamp reads: FM- Fashion Manor – Fine China – ROSAY – Japan The History of Fashion Manor- Fine China Company Backstamps that use the terms “Fine China Japan” together with rather general words like “Delux” are not Brand name China companies; they are “Secondary” companies. Secondary Backstamps are those used for the purpose of exporting, marketing & retail distribution rather than for the purpose of identifying a maker. The maker in these cases did not want to be identified either because there was no kudos in their own name (too small & unheard of) or they were too recognizable (Noritake). Noritake alone used over 400 different Backstamps, only some of them are obviously attributable to them. So unlike European Back-stamps, particularly UK marks, Japanese Back-stamps of the 20th Century are not placed on the wares in order to identify the maker & are factors of export, marketing & distribution. The big picture in Japan’s secondary Back-stamping is this: there were many hundreds of china decorating firms active in the early to middle of the 20th century.
