Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a nice and somewhat rare Shure Brothers ES616 model mic based on the more common 578 model Omnidyne (omni-directional) dynamic microphone from the 1960’s. This was a 1970’s / 80’s era mic that was factory set at high impedance and looked identical to the 578 except that it had the XLR cable attachment much like the SM76 and came in the satin chrome finish as where the SM76 was a painted version. This was a very modern design for Shure at the time and has a sleek, clean look to it. This was great for general broadcasting and recording purposes. This unique mic comes with the original plastic Shure mic case, Shure mic clip, data sheet as well as a new black foam exterior pop filter for improved sound performance. Pic # 2 shows this very model and it’s basic characteristics in an older Shure catalog I have from 1981. Pic # 4 shows the actual data sheet for this microphone that you’ll be receiving. The data sheet is in very good condition and has a ton of technical info on this model that will really come in handy. The ES615 has a clear, clean tone that is void of bass and will be ideal for a HAM Radio set up or for doing basic recordings. This mic is omni-directional in nature as well. It comes with the original the mic clip, exterior pop filter and Shure mic pouch. You can see the mics similarities to the earlier Shure 578 model in pic # 2 from an old Shure catalog I have. The ES615 microphone was short run production Shure microphone manufactured and I’m not quite sure the story behind this mic? This might have been the last of the 578 type mics to be sold? I really don’t have any info on these as they are quite hard to come across. It should be noted that while this mic works like new the signal strength on these aren’t as strong as some other dynamic models I have heard. This model much like the SM53 and SM54 are a little weaker and I think it has to do with the smaller magnets used? Again, nothing wrong with the mic. These just seem to have about a 33% weaker signal than a standard SM58 of that era. Just get in close to the mic or use some gain on your audio equipment. This helps greatly. As you can see in the pictures provided…this ES615 is in very good condition having just lite wear. Please let the detailed pics be your guide. The Shure label looks really good but the front screen has a couple subtle dents. No tarnish or odors however and I replaced the inner pop filter as the original was completely degraded away. This helps decrease the dreaded “pops” I also included a new exterior pop filter for improved performance. It fits the mic like a glove and looks great. The satin chrome handle shows just a few lite scuff marks and scratches. Physically speaking this ES615 is an easy 8 on a scale of 1 – 10. The mic itself is appx 8 1/2 inches long X 3/4 inches wide. Very lite weight and easy to hold for prolonged periods of time. No cable is included but this takes a standard XLR cable. I did clean the mics XLR pins as they were quite filthy. They look new and ensure a perfect signal once the cable is attached. The dark blue plastic Shure mic case is included. It’s in excellent condition and a great place to store the mic when not in use or while transporting. Will keep your mic free of physical damage. It has a tension style upper lid that closes tightly once lowered. It has two new inner foam pads as well to cushion the contents. The mic clip is a Shure A57D model that works great for this mic and will screw onto any desk or floor stand you have. Plenty of tilt up and down as needed. The clip is in excellent shape. MICROPHONE STAND SHOWN IS NOT PART OF THIS SALE..USED FOR DISPLAY PURPOSES ONLY… I do have several period stands for sale if you need one? A beautiful ES615 worthy of any fine vintage mic collection even if you don’t want to actually use it. As with all my vintage microphones… I can promise you will be happy with it for the price paid.
