For sale as pictured: perhaps the best detective novel ever written along with perhaps the best spy novel ever written. Dashiell Hammett had been writing detective fiction for nearly a decade when he published The Maltese Falcon in 1930. It was filmed twice before John Huston got ahold of the script and made the definitive version in 1941. The Maltese Falcon as a film is considered a classic of Hollywood film noir; one of its greatest strengths is that it adapts the source material very faithfully — in many cases, word-for-word. That’s because Hammett’s novel is widely considered the greatest work of detective fiction ever published. Notably, The Maltese Falcon “transcends genre fiction” — while it establishes many of the tropes of the hard-boiled detective that would be built on by Raymond Chandler and copied by countless others, it isn’t just a series of tropes. Maltese Falcon tells an intricate story about the titular golden bird and the attempts by a collection of thieves, cutthroats, and ne’er-do-wells to obtain it. The plot, though, is really just a framework for Hammett to play with character development, mood, language, and subtle social commentary. It should be read for pleasure, and it should also be read for the same reason Romeo and Juliet or The Grapes of Wrath should be read — it’s a part of the American idiom, an important cultural artifact that is referenced in countless ways subtle and overt throughout our media environment. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold is perhaps the closest analog to Falcon in the realm of spy fiction. Ian Fleming is doubtless the most popular spy novelist of all time — down largely to the highly successful series of James Bond films — but John le Carré is the literary heir of Hammett, weaving intricate plots, subtle, morally dubious characters, and an understanding of British history and culture during the Cold War into taut thrillers. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold tells the story of Alec Leamas, a veteran British spy who wants nothing more than to retire. Before he will be allowed to do so, however, he is assigned by Control (the leader of the Circus, or the MI5) to go undercover to East Berlin to implicate the leader of the East German secret service as a British double agent. Drama ensues. George Smiley, the main character of le Carré’s more well-known Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, plays a small but important role in the story. Picture Gary Oldman as you read it. Here for sale are copies of each of these amazing novels in reader condition. The Maltese Falcon is a Vintage Books paperback edition published in 1972. The Spy Who Came In From the Cold is a Dell edition from 1965 — the first paperback pressing of the novel. Here are the condition notes: Both are intact and complete. Notably, both have significant exterior wear and damage — see photos — including a couple of tears to and a missing chunk from the cover of The Maltese Falcon, and similar but more extensive damage to The Spy Who Came In From the Cold. In both cases the covers are still attached and functional, but this damage affects presentation significantly — these are definitely reader copies. In both cases bindings are intact and reasonably tight. Interiors are clean and unmarked with moderately tan pages.
