For anyone who appreciates HIGH-QUALITY, VINTAGE – Collectible & Functional – European, ENAMELED CAST IRON … made by one of the BEST MAKERS of the day & ever produced, even still … D. E Sanford Co (DESCO Corp – makers of DESCOWARE) purchased by Le Creuset in the 1960’s.Offered here is a – Vintage-DESCOWARE – Small-Size, Enameled Cast Iron, Round Dual Handle Casserole Dish with a Domed, Open-Arched Flat-Handle Lid – Sunny-Yellow Enamel Exterior and White Enamel Interior cooking-surfaces – in EXCELLENT, gently-used condition. Likely manufactured in the 1940’s -1950’s.The form of this Lidded Casserole Dish is classic and elegant. The Casserole Dish is round – the upper edges are vertical, round to horizontal forming an inner rim (where the lid would seat), round again – tapering-in a bit before rounding to the flat base. Dual handles rise and flare outwards from the top edge, are beaded beneath with a molded ribbed upper surface – for a good and secure grasp. The exterior base seat-rim has no enamel – the center base is slightly recessed. There is no maker’s mark – but the molded information, design and features are recognizable as Descoware. The Casserole Lid is round and domed – having an oval depression-well beneath the handle to allow for fingers to grasp the handle well. The handles are arched, flat (~1/4″ thick), and open-looped – good for grasp, as well as stylish. The seating-rim is not enameled.All surfaces are HIGHLY-Glossy shiny and clean – there is some residue or staining in craze lines and on the base.The exterior enamel colour is ICONIC-Vintage, HIGHLY collected – 1950’s Citron – this colour is described as a Sunny-Yellow colour. The Lid is Yellow enamel inside and out; The Casserole is Yellow on the exterior sides, handle undersides, and bases.The interior cooking-surfaces are White in colour – showing only light rubs or scratches from very gentle use. Small Lidded Casserole – Size 16Small Casserole Lid -Molded into the inner surface – “FE; 16; BELGIUM”. Measures 5 7/8″ in diameter across the outer edge; ~1 3/4″ in height.There are some very small chipping along the edge, some crazing beneath the handle.Small Casserole Dish – Molded into the base surface – “17A; 16; E; FE; BELGIUM”. Measures – 6 3/8″ in diameter across the top edge; 7 7/8″ across the handles; 2 3/4″ in height, 3″ in height at the handle-tops, ~4 1/2″ in height Lidded.There are some small chips along the upper edge. There are some chips to the metal in the enamel at the base; crazing on the center base and just outside the base seat rim.SOME INTERESTING INFORMATION –D. E Sanford Co – maker of Descoware -Descoware was originally known as Bruxelles Ware, later becoming Descoware by way of their being imported to the US.Originally was produced in the colours, Transition Red-to-Orange (called FLAME) and Sunny-YELLOW (originally named Citron) – other colours came later – Antique Gold, Avocado Green, Sky Blue, Marigold Yellow, Chocolate Brown and Turquoise (briefly).Graphics designs came in the 1950s – first came the Maple Leaf and later Descorama Series Patterns came – which included The Markley Series, Cream w Vegetables, Yellow w Vegetables, Cream w Mock Tulips, Blue w Mock Tulips, Yellow w Mock Tulips – often mistaken for the Dru Holland Pattern.
