Piroli 1804 Copper Plate Engraving An Original Historical Print from HistoryOnPaper (Below is a rough translation from the French of the engraving’s description.) VOLUME (TOME) VI — PLATE 7 FIG. I. We see on this lamp one of these gladiators, called, Retiarii, from their way of fighting. The gladiator Retiarius carried nets in one hand, with which he sought to envelop his adversary; his main weapon was a harpoon or trident; he sometimes also had a dagger or a short sword, as we see here; his garment was a tunic; he wore a cap (pileus or galerus) which must have left his face exposed, which he presented with affectation to the spectators. The adversary was generally designated by the name of Gauls, and more particularly by that of Mirmillon; it is also to this that the name Secutor appears to belong, used by Suetonius in the description of a combat, where a Retiarius, regaining the advantage, kills with his trident the five victorious enemies of his party. This bizarre combat was the image of a peach, and, to make it more complete, the Mirmillon wore a fish on his helmet; and his enemy, while pursuing him, cried out: “I am angry with the fish, I am not angry with you: O Gauls, why are you fleeing from me”? Juvenal, in the 8th Satyr (v. 200 et seq.), makes a senator, Gracchus, appear, and exposing himself, in the role of an ill-skilled Retiarius, to an ignominy more serious than wounds: nowhere does the device of this type of combat is not described with more precision. FIG. II to VI. Lamp with three wicks, in the shape of a three-sided altar, on which rests a kind of quadrangular vase; three figures serve as ornament on each face of the altar. In one, we can recognize Apollo; in the second, the god Mars; and in the third, Fortune, designated by the scepter and the cornucopia, if not Concord, according to what we have said about pl. II of volume V. These Deities are, undoubtedly, gathered in this monument as the object of a particular devotion. The details we give of this curious lamp present it in all aspects. Piroli avec une explication par S-Ph Caude, 1804-1806, Paris, F et P Piranesi, T. —- Herculaneum was an ancient Roman town, located in the modern-day comune of Ercolano, Campania, Italy. Herculaneum was buried under volcanic ash and pumice in the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Like the nearby city of Pompeii, Herculaneum is famous as one of the few ancient cities to be preserved nearly intact, as the ash that blanketed the town protected it against looting and the elements. Although less known than Pompeii today, it was the first and, for a long time, the only discovered Vesuvian city (in 1709). Pompeii was revealed in 1748 and identified in 1763. Unlike Pompeii, the mainly pyroclastic material that covered Herculaneum carbonized and preserved more wooden objects such as roofs, beds, and doors, as well as other organic-based materials such as food and papyrus. ~~~~ Volumes 1 – 3 of this classic work on Herculaneum contained plates of art work (pictures) found at the site. Volume 4 contained engravings of discovered Busts and Reliefs that were created in bronze. Volume 5 was of statues found.
