Soviet Russian USSR WWII medal Order of the Patriotic War 2nd Class with serial number in the 800-thousand range, fully researched with archival award documents and significantly supported by other Soviet archival references & secondary sources, awarded to Junior Lieutenant Vasily Timofeevich Kutyrev, Rifle Platoon Commander, 1st Battalion, 269th Rifle Regiment, 136th “Kiev” Red-Banner Order-of-Bogdan-Khmelnitsky Rifle Division, for the October 20, 1944 assault together with tanks of the 8th Tank Corps against the left flank of the 5th Panzer Division “Viking” – in particular, elements of Panzergrenadier Regiment 9 “Germania”, under Hans Dorr – on the “Wet Triangle” just north of Warsaw. On the German side opposing Kutyrev in the village of Karolino, Alois Schnaubelt was awarded the Knight’s Cross for knocking out Soviet T-34s with an 88! Kutyrev’s citation reads: “On 20.10.1944, in an offensive battle in the area of the village of Moczydło, Comrade Kutyrev was first – with his platoon – to rush into the enemy trenches, capture them, and destroyed up to 30 German soldiers, and took 10 Germans prisoner. In battle for the village of Karolino, he took the place of the company commander, who had been put out of action, and led the company. Developing the offensive, he accomplished the company’s assigned mission.” Kutyrev’s POWs were approximately 10% of his division’s total for the period. Kutyrev subsequently earned an Order of the Red Star in the summer of 1945 for continued bravery as commander of a self-propelled gun-mounted sub-machine gun assault platoon. The citation for that Red Star refers back to to the above battle and the advance to the Modlin Fortress and mentions the storming of a bunker and elimination of 20 German soldiers. It also mentions him being the first – with his platoon – to enter Płock where he destroyed 2 machine guns. Exceedingly rare award for combat against a famed Waffen Panzer Division (a successful advance no less), and for the opposing side of a Knight’s Cross action! Plus a baseline outstanding citation, and a history heavily and unambiguously supported by archival & secondary references. For further information about this action on the German side, see “From the Realm of a Dying Sun” by Douglas E. Nash Sr., in which the engagement is presented in great detail. Some screenshots in listing images. Condition is as depicted – essentially excellent except an enamel repair to the 5 o’clock arm. The serial number of the award is authentic and matches the serial number shown in the archival documents, obviously!
