RS Silesia Tillowitz Condiment Bowl Underplate & Ladle Daisies w/Gold 1910-1945 An Exquisite HAND PAINTED Decorative RS Silesia CONDIMENT Set w/BOWL, UNDERPLATE & LADLE, Yellow DAISIES w/Solid GOLD painted Handle, GOLD painted Rims, circa 1910-1945 from Tillowitz, Germany DESCRIPTION: The artist skillfully painted yellow daisies on the bowl & underplate. The handles are painted with a solid bold gold paint. The edges are trimmed in gold. The handle of the ladle is neatly designed with curviture such that it lays securely in the bowl when its handle is placed to the right side of the bowl’s handle. The oval shape of the underplate accents the shape of the condiment bowl. CONDITION: The condition of this set is very good with the exception of a tight hairline in the bottom of the condiment bowl and a craze line on the outside of that bowl. See photos #7 & #12. We can find no defects or other damage. There is no rubbing to the hand painted areas or the gold. We can find no wear to the gold on the rims. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, repairs or other hairlines. This set is beautiful and displays well. It is functional. DIMENSIONS: The oval shaped bowl is 4 9/16″ handle to spout and is 3 7/8″ wide with a height of 2 3/4″ to the top of the handle. The oval shaped underplate is 6″ by 4 1/2″ and has a height of 1 1/8″. The length of the ladle is 5″ with a diameter of 1 3/4″ on its spoon. HISTORY/MARKS: The roots of RS Prussia go back to 1868 when Reinhold Schlegelmilch purchased the forge for the purpose of establishing a porcelain factory. The factory soon became the largest employer in the area and despite the restrictions imposed by the McKinley Tariff act of 1884 continued to grow. The “RS” initials stand for Reinhold Schlegelmilch, founder of that porcelain factory specializing in hard paste porcelain at Suhl in Prussia which is present-day Germany. The work of his two sons, Arnold and Erhard, made the mark bearing his initials famous. Reinhold & Arnold operated the Suhl factory while Erhard established a porcelain factory in Tillowitz, Germany in 1894. Reinhold died in 1906 and later Arnold closed the porcelain factory in Suhl in December 1917, due to World War I and a shortage of people skilled in the making of such hard paste porcelain. Arnold joined Erhard at the Tillowitz factory which operated as part of Reinhold Schlegelmilch Enterprise until the death in 1934 of both brothers. The mark on this sugar is the RS Silesia green wreath used from 1910-1945. This is mark #7 in Mary Frank Gaston’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of RS Prussia, 3rd series.
