Ringtail Small print This is a small print by my father Jay Bryan Jones! My dad does not sell any of his paintings, of which he has many! He is essentially an unknown artist who paints for enjoyment not self promotion or profit. He once had a judge who was interested in purchasing his artwork, but he declined and sent her a print instead. Here’s another interesting tidbit…one of my dad’s original paintings was stolen through the mail! It was supposed to have been returned to him after a contest, but never made it back home! My guess is that his work was so desirable, someone (who no doubt had seen it) had to keep it!!! I watched my dad paint for years, many solitary hours spent in his studio. He would enter contest after contest, but never got #1. I was sad for my dad who I thought deserved to have placed first at least once in his lifetime, but the competition was always fierce and became impossible when the Hautman brothers came along and started taking all the first places! And, after my mother died in 2013, my dad was never the same. DETAILS: This painting was number 13th of the top 20 paintings of the 2002 Federal Duck Stamp contest. It’s a stunning piece that showcases his talent as a wildlife conservation artist. The print is signed by the artist and features a beautiful water landscape of a ringtail duck in his natural habitat. Artist retains all copyrights. About the artist: Jay Bryan Jones, Jr was born in Vivian, Louisiana in 1937. He graduated from Ruston High School and later Northeastern University in Monroe, Louisiana where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts degree (BAFA). Afterward, he attended Chouinard Art institute in Los Angeles, California, thinking at that time that he wanted to be an illustrator. Later, Jay returned home and in 1964, he married Shreveport artist, Jane Ann Jones, who also had a degree in art. They had two children, Jay and Kristi. He joined the Air Force reserves prior to the Vietnam War. Jay engaged in real estate development, creating the Cypress Cove Apartment Complex by Cross Lake in Shreveport. He and his partners were highly successful until the 1973 Arab Oil Embargo hit our country, and created a financial depression that affected his investors and partners. My dad lost his big business venture! Afterwards, he began career in social work for the state of Louisiana and bought a few apartment buildings for rental income. Jay has pursued his passion for art by creating numerous duck paintings for State and Federal Duck Stamp contests. He first entered the duck stamp contests in the 1980s. His talent developed and he continued painting and entering contests for several decades. His highest achievement was placing 13th in the 2002 Federal Duck Stamp Competition. He also placed 2nd and 3rd in the Massachusetts Duck Stamp competition which portrays historical duck decoys of Massachusetts. In 2012, he was the top ten finalist for the Nevada Duck Stamp contest. Painting has been his most passionate hobby, aside from writing screen plays, and he once had an exhibit of his wildlife paintings at the Commercial National Bank in Shreveport, Louisiana. He has also painted maritime themes, portraits, other works of art. Jay continues to paint today, primarily working in oils.
