My Father, John Vahey, worked for the Pennsylvania Rail Road (PRR), Penn Central Transportation Company and Consolidated Rail Corporation, first as an Electrician in the Altoona Works, Locomotive Car Shops, Juniata, PA, then as an Industrial Engineer in the Engineering Office, Juniata, PA and the Locomotive and Rail Car Repair Estimating Office at the Samuel Rea Car Shops in Hollidaysburg, PA. During the late 1950’s, he also attended college classes at the Altoona, PA campus of the Pennsylvania State University to obtain a Degree in Industrial Engineering. During this time, my Father became a big collector of PRR publications and photographs as well as all types of engineering documents and diagrams. He would often obtain these items from fellow PRR employees within the Altoona Works and later Penn Central and Conrail employees at the Samuel Rae Facility. When my Father died in May 1999, I received all of his railroad career handbooks, manuals, and memorabilia. I carefully packed all these items and brought them back to our smoke free family home in Manassas, VA where they were retained for over 20 years. I have retained these items for over 20 years; however, since my wife and I have relocated from Manassas, VA to Fort Myers, FL we no longer have the space to display or indefinitely store all of his railroad memorabilia and array of railroad engineering documents, manuals and diagrams. As a result, I have decided to begin posting these items for sale on eBay. The next item for sale is this Pennsylvania Railroad Company, Altoona Works, Industrial Engineering Department, Manual Welding – Electric Arc Formula A.W. 60-1, Softcover Book, dated March 1965. The front view of this softcover book on Manual Welding – Electric ARC is shown in the first attached high resolution photograph. The color of the front cover is vanilla, similar to a file folder and contains the following text: “PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD COMPANY ALTOONA WORKS INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT MANUAL WELDING – ELECTRIC ARC FORMULA A.W. 60-1”. This manual was produced at the Altoona Works facility in Juniata, PA specifically for their welding facilities. The contents of this manual were later adopted by Penn Central when car repairs were being made at the Samuel Rae facility in Hollidaysburg, PA. This particular manual was one of my Father’s prized documents. While working as an electrician in the Locomotive Car Shops, he saw all of the other trades and took great interest on the latest welding techniques that were being tried and if successful implemented. For budgetary constraints, this manual was created from a manual typewriter versus a printing press. The width of the softcover book is 8 ½ inches wide and its height is 11 inches high. The manual’s 48 pages plus 21 pages including a blank worksheet for ARC TIME – INCLUDES ROD CHANGE, AMERICAN WELDING SOCIETY SUMMARY OF STANDARD WELDING SYMBOLS, ELEMENT SUMMARY Element Descriptions, and ELEMENTS ANALYSIS CHARTS which are held together by two brass folder connectors. The round brass connectors are approximately ½ of an inch in diameter and inserted at the top and bottom of the manual. Note: The front cover shows wear along with dirt smudges from operational use in the Altoona Works Shops. The rear view of this softcover book on Manual Welding – Electric ARC is shown in the second attached high resolution photograph. There is no text on this side of the manual. The only distinguishable characteristic is the other end of the brass folder connector. The vertical brass prongs are approximately 2 inches long. Note: The rear cover shows wear along with dirt smudges from operational use in the Altoona Works Shops. The spine side view of this softcover book on Manual Welding – Electric ARC is shown in the third attached high resolution photograph. The thickness of the manual is approximately 3/8 of an inch thick. The open pages side view of this softcover book on Manual Welding – Electric ARC is shown in the fourth attached high resolution photograph. Note: Some of the pages have a natural upward curl from being repeatedly used. The inside cover page is shown in the fifth attached high resolution photograph. It contains the following text: “PENNSYLVANIA RAILROAD COMPANY ALTOONA WORKS INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT MANUAL WELDING – ELECTRIC ARC FORMULA A.W. 60-1, MARCH 1965”. It also exhibits the following information: “DEVELOPED BY: C.B. Gural, INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER; APPROVED BY: J.E. Woomer, 5-12-65, SENIOR INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER, PROCESS ENGINEERING; G.R. Busman, 5-10-65, SUPERVISOR INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING”. This soft copy version contains the original individual signatures. The first page of the “TABLE OF CONTENTS” is shown in the sixth attached high resolution photograph. The second page of the Table of Contents shown with a number “2” is shown in the seventh attached high resolution photograph. The “FORMULA REPORT”, “FORMULA A.W. 60-1” is shown in the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh attached high resolution photographs. It includes information on “PARTS, OPERATION, WORK STATION, ALLOWED TIME, APPLICATION, ANALYSIS, PROCEDURE, and INSPECTION”. The “WORKSHEET, FORMULA A.W. 60-1, HAND WELDING – ELECTRIC ARC” is shown in the twelfth attached high resolution photograph. The weight of this softcover book on Manual Welding – Electric ARC is approximately 12.8 ounces. This is a rare opportunity to start or expand your PRR historical publication collection.
