Description New Vienna Octet The Decca Recordings Australian Eloquence 18 CD Box SetProduct introduction A collection of recordings by Vienna chamber ensembles, including the New Vienna Octet, Vienna Wind Soloists, Vienna Waldhorn Ensemble, and Vienna Flute Trio, composed of outstanding performers selected from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. 18-CD box set. Limited edition. The original Vienna Octet, led by clarinetist Alfred Boskovsky, made its final recording for Decca in 1972, but he had already revived the group’s name by selecting young members of the Vienna Philharmonic who would continue the ensemble’s activities and play sweet wind music. Clarinetist Peter Schmidl succeeded Boskovsky in the new octet. The New Vienna Octet also signed an exclusive contract with Decca and began recording in 1977 with the same repertoire that defined their sound and musical approach: Schubert’s Octets and Beethoven’s Septets. Schmidl also founded the Vienna Wind Soloists, a wind ensemble, with colleagues from the Vienna Philharmonic’s wind section. Their debut was more adventurous, featuring works by Hindemith, Janacek and Ligeti, but their performances still shone with the unique clarity of the Viennese wind sound. The Vienna Wind Soloists recorded Schoenberg’s Woodwind Quintet for Deutsche Grammophon in 1977, which Schmidl considers the highlight of his career, but they also recorded Mozart’s Clarinet Trio, Clarinet Quintet and three great Serenades. All of them have instinctively adaptive phrasing and a truly beautiful sound that is rarely equalled on CD. The final recordings of Beethoven’s Octets and Sextets, made in 1992, are often underrated but fully comparable to the famous Vienna Octet recordings of the 50s and 60s. Includes many CD firsts and world premieres, including the first CD of Schubert’s Octet from 1976-77 and the world premiere of Schoenberg’s Woodwind Quintet. Re-released for the first time in over 30 years, the 1980 recording of Mozart’s Gran Partita is coupled with the Adagio K.411 (previously only available in Japan). Includes a booklet with a new essay by Peter Quantrill, including interviews with Peter Schmidl and producer Michael Haas, and archival illustrations and photographs. Newly remastered.
