Designedby Norbert Singer and Tony Hatter,the 911 GT1, despite sharing aname with the 911 road car,featured little in common with theroad going car, with only theheadlights and taillights shared.The car was powered by a 3.2LM96/80 twin-turbocharged flat-6;its frontal chassis was based onthe 993 while its rear subframesand engine were derived from whatwas used in the 962C. Twenty-fiveroad-going versions of the 911 GT1,named the 911 GT1 Straßenversion(lit. “street version”), were producedto homologate the car. The car madeits debut in the 1996 BPR Global GTSeries at Brands Hatch. The Porsche 911 GT1-98 was afurther refinement of the 911 GT1 andthe car’s final variant overall,competing in the LMGT1 category.Despite sharing a similar name withthe previous 911 GT1s, the 911GT1-98 bore little resemblance to theprevious two models, insteadfeaturing new bodywork and panelingthat were more similar to that of asports prototype than that of a grandtouring race car. The car competed inthe FIA International GT Series; it wasthe closest competition to Mercedes-Benz’s CLK LM, but was not usuallyable to match it on most occasionsdue to engine regulations regardingair restrictors being unfavorable toturbocharged engines. Despite this, a911 GT1-98 managed to win the 199824 Hours of Le Mans due to itscompetitors having reliabilityproblems. The cars were withdrawnfrom competition after the 1998season. Five chassis were built, aswell as one street-legal version usedto homologate the car.
