This is a beautiful and vibrant Fine Vintage UTAH Plein Air Impressionist Landscape Oil Painting on Masonite, by renowned LDS Utah born, Colorado Impressionist painter, Trent Gudmundsen (b. 1978.) This artwork depicts a bucolic and colorful Utah woodlands landscape scene, with a small creek, tall evergreen trees, and a majestic blue mountain vista in the far distance. Signed: “Gudmundsen” in the lower right corner. This small gem is approximately 12 1/2 x 15 1/2 inches (including frame.) Actual artwork is approximately 9 x 12 inches. Very good condition for age, with moderate scuffing, edge wear and gilding loss the frame. However, I think this patina is intentional, and that this is a purposely distressed frame (please see photos.) Priced to Sell. This is a very early work by the artist, created in the late 1990’s when he was ditching college art classes to paint the wondrous Utah landscapes around him in plein air. Biography from Debbie Leeuw Fine ArtTrent Gudmundsen, after intently studying the works of other artists when he was young, found his painterly style one day when he decided to paint an unfamiliar subject: the interior of a college restaurant. In his paintings, which are romantic and expressive, he also tries to be realistic, a combination not easily achieved by artists.States the artist: “When I was young, I wanted nothing more than to be a great landscape painter, so I studied up on it and tried to get my work to emulate the strengths of the best landscape works I knew. When I first started painting interiors, however, I knew of no other art in that genre–no other interior paintings from which to garner inspiration. Because I was essentially on my own in that genre, I naturally settled into a distinct style of my own that I now infuse into every subject I paint”.Trent’s work is honest and from the heart, whether he is depicting a hotel lobby, a portrait, or a pristine mountain landscape. Whatever the subject, Gudmundsen feels that an artist’s work is best when it is done “without really trying.” He states further, “Any artist does his best work when he paints from his heart instead of from his head”.In 2003 Gudmundsen was selected for inclusion in Southwest Art’ magazine’s “21 Under 31” article (Sept. ’03 issue). That same year, Trent’s painting Eleven A.M. was chosen by juror Kevin Macpherson for an “Award of Excellence” at the Oil Painters of America National show in Taos, New Mexico. His work has also been included in such shows as Paint the Parks “Top 100” in 2007, Arts for the Parks “Top 200” in 2004, “Windows to the Divine” Invitational in Denver (a sold-out show for Trent), and three times in the International Museum of Contemporary Masters “Salon International”.Gudmundsen and his wife, Lorajean, currently live in northern Utah where they raise their two children, maintain an old renovated home, and try to live true Christian lives. “CAPTURING THE BEAUTY IN EVERYDAY MOMENTS”Back in the late 90’s, Trent Gudmundsen found himself skipping his college art classes to instead paint in the nearby fields and canyons; he dropped out half-way through his second year, having painted well over 200 small studies from nature in that amount of time. In that way I’m a constantly-changing artist, but with solid roots and ideals.My wife (Lorajean) and I, and our 5 kids live in Idaho where I’ve built our masonry house from the ground up by myself, and where we raise cows and some chickens, grow a large garden, and generally live a somewhat “slow” and old-fashioned lifestyle. I’ve often thought about what I would do if for some reason I couldn’t be an artist, and then I’m reminded that nearly everything I do every day is part of this life of art that I’ve chosen.Primarily self-taught, I’m influenced by regional artists Valoy Eaton, Leconte Stewart, and somewhat by the Russian impressionists.
