Includes plenty of player character options and advice for new Dungeon Masters. A complete game in one book! 2022. 1st printing. Originally published via Kickstarter. 148 pages, black and white. Softcover, 8.5″ x 11″. Like new, unread condition. Has minor edge and corner wear, as received by publisher. Inside pages are clean, flat, and sharp. PUBLISHER’S ORIGINAL DESCRIPTION: Bugbears & Borderlands (B&B) is a true Basic version of 5e, taking the rules to their very core, removing complexity, while still offering plenty of character customization options. Completely compatible with 5e, B&B is perfect for teaching the game to new players, playing a pick-up game where time is short, or for those who prefer a lighter rules system. What would it look like if Moldvay was asked to create a Basic version of 5e? I suspect something like this. While there is an existing official Basic version, it includes all of the rules (not very basic) and hardly any Player Character option. Bugbears and Borderlands flips the script on that. The rules have been streamlined to the very basic core, while still offering a lot of character customization options at character generation, WHILE also being very easy to learn and play. Hundreds of pages can be daunting for newer or younger players. It’s a reason why Moldvay’s B/X back in the day brought in so many new gamers, because it was an easy read and easy to play. B&B emulates this philosophy while being largely compatible with core 5e. Here’s what you’ll find: Simplified action economy–bonus actions are removed. 95% of everything will be an action or a free action. Concentration is out–No concentration mechanic. Spells have a duration that you don’t need to worry about maintaining or keeping track of yet another rule. Ability scores are out–With the way 5e works, there isn’t really a functional difference between having a 14 or a 15. It’s the modifier that counts. And that’s all B&B has, is that modifier. Individual skills are out–Instead of individual skills, everything is ability based. If you’re proficient in Strength, you apply your proficiency bonus to all strength-based skills. Feats are out–When you create your character, you gain a trait from your background choice that is similar to a feat, but when you level up, your ASIs are to your modifiers only. Leveling up is fast and easy. No more waiting a half hour to figure out what you’re gonna do, delaying the game. Everything about the design of this game is to speed along play and keep it easy to learn. Short rests are almost out. They still exist technically, but only as a way to recover a bit of hit points. No class/race/background feature uses a short rest. From a nonsmoking household. All items are carefully packaged to ship in a cardboard box or mailer to prevent transit damage.
