Archaios Numismatics __________________________________________ Description: Pseudo Autonomous Roman Provincial Bronze Coin of Commodus from Coela in Thrace. Circa 180-193 AD. Obverse: Emperor Commodus Laureate and draped bust right, COMMODO-S ANTO AY around. Reverse: Prow Right with Cornucopia above at an angle ; AEL MVNVCI / CVELA around and in exergue. Mint: Coela, Thrace Size: 18 mm Weight: 2.42 g Ref: RPC IV online 5014 (only 4 specimens listed, all in Museum collections); cf NN 24, 276 Condition: Good Fine. Quite an interesting type with Prow . As always, Please use the Pictures as your judge as grading is subjective. Note: Coela (Coila) was an ancient eastern Roman colony within Chersonese Thrace located on a port on the Gallipoli peninsula near Sestos. This colony was referred to as Aeliium Municipium Coila and variations of that name occur on its Roman Provincial coinage. The word “Coele”, literally means “hollow” in Koine Greek. The town was located at modern Kilya, in European Turkey. It issued gold and silver coins under Alexander and from the early 2nd century AD struck Roman provincial and colonial coins.
