Antique William B. Kerr Sterling Silver Velvet Lined Jewelry Box w/ Lock1855-1892 Large Size measures 7″ across, 4.75″ wide, and is 2-5/8″ tall. Elegant jewelry box from William B. Kerr & Co., one of the oldest American silver manufacturers.Antique silver items of this brand are kept in museums in the U.S.A. The hallmark is their trademark medieval ax logo, followed by the word STERLING and a mold number.This hallmark denotes 1855-1992. In 1927, William B. Kerr & Co. was absorbed by Gorham, the largest silver manufacturing company.Gorham sold it to Textron Corporation in 1967. This box is in superb antique original condition. There are no dings, repairs, damage, etc.A top center cartouche has the initials DA.There is a minuscule raised area on the side of the lock area. It looks as ifit could be easily pushed back a bit by a jeweler if desired.I tried to capture it in a close-up of the lock area, but it is so minor that you can hardly tell.I just want to be very accurate!! The box opens up to a gorgeous pale green velvet interior.The top of the box is lined in velvet. The bottom of the box has an oval velvet pad across the top.Underneath the pad are beautifully lined sections for jewelry.There is a 4+” long ring slot area, and 2 pockets for other itemssuch as pendants, earrings, etc. The box has a locking mechanism.Unfortunately, I do not have the original key.I am including 2 keys that fit into the slot, but they do not turn.I did not want to risk any damage by pushing too hard or forcing them to turn.Often with these old boxes, applying oil to loosen the lockmechanism is all that is required.A jeweler or locksmith could certainly help with this.It still closes perfectly even without locking it. There is light patina on the box; it would shine up beautifully. This box is quite sturdy and weighs a substantial 544 grams (without keys and velvet pad).
