Good fortune in!”. From Wikipedia:”Setsubun (節分) is the day before the beginning of spring in the old calendar in Japan.[1][2] The name literally means ‘seasonal division’, referring to the day just before the first day of spring in the traditional calendar, known as Setsubun” … “Setsubun is now typically held on February 3 (in 2021 it was on 2nd February),[3] with the day after – the first day of spring in the old calendar – known as Risshun (立春)”” … “”In its association with the Lunar New Year, Setsubun, though not the official New Year, was thought of as similar in its ritual and cultural associations of ‘cleansing’ the previous year as the beginning of the new season of spring. Setsubun was accompanied by a number of rituals and traditions held at various levels to drive away the previous year’s bad fortunes and evil spirits for the year to come.” “The custom of Setsubun as we know it today began in the Muromachi period (1336–1573). Every household of the aristocracy and samurai class threw beans from their houses into the open air. The [[Ainōshō]] [ja],[8] a dictionary compiled during the Muromachi period, states that the practice of bean-throwing during Setsubun originated from a legend in the 10th century, during the reign of Emperor Uda, that a monk on Mt. Kurama escaped misfortune by blinding oni with roasted beans. The Japanese word for bean, 豆, is pronounced mame, which can be written as ‘devil’s eye’ (魔目), and some believe that the pronunciation is similar to that of mametsu (魔滅), meaning ‘to destroy the devil’, which is why people began throwing beans during Setsubun.[9][10][6]From the Edo period (1603–1867), the custom of throwing beans at Shinto shrines, Buddhist temples, and homes of ordinary people spread throughout Japan as an event or festival to drive away evil spirits during Setsubun. It was also during this period that the custom of tying roasted sardine heads to holly sprig to decorate the gates of houses during Setsubun began. This custom was intended to scare away oni with the thorns of the holly leaves and the smell of the roasted sardines. The original form of this custom is recorded in the Tosa Nikki, compiled in 934 during the Heian period (794–1185). The diary describes a Shinto shimenawa (sacred rope) that was hung on the gate of a house during the New Year’s holiday to mark the boundary of purification, and that a mullet head pierced with a sprig of holly was attached to the shimenawa.[9][11]” “The main ritual associated with the observance of Setsubun is mamemaki (豆撒き, ‘bean scattering’); this ritual sees roasted soybeans (known as fukumame (福豆, ‘fortune beans’)) either thrown out of the front door, or at a member of the family wearing an oni (demon or ogre) mask while shouting ‘Devils out! Fortune in!’ (鬼は外! 福は内!, Oni wa soto! Fuku wa uchi!),[3] before slamming the door.[13] The beans are thought to symbolically purify the home by driving away the evil spirits that bring misfortune and bad health with them. Then, as part of bringing luck in, it is customary to eat roasted soybeans, one for each year of one’s life (kazoedoshi), plus one more for bringing good luck for the year.[14][15][16] The custom of mamemaki first appeared in the Muromachi period,[2] and is usually performed by either a man of the household born in the corresponding zodiac year for the new year (toshiotoko (年男)), or else the male head of the household.[17] Because Watanabe no Tsuna, a retainer of Minamoto no Yorimitsu during the Heian period (794–1185), is associated with the legend that he vanquished oni historically considered to be the strongest, such as Shuten-doji and Ibaraki-doji, there is a tradition that oni stay away from people named Watanabe and their houses. For this reason, some families with the surname Watanabe have not practiced the custom of throwing beans on Setsubun for generations.[18][19] Watanabe no Tsuna was the first person to take the surname Watanabe, and Watanabe is the fifth most common surname in Japan, with approximately 1.08 million people as of 2017.[20] Though still a somewhat common practice in households, many people will also or instead attend a shrine or temple’s spring festival, where the practice of mamemaki is performed;[3] in some areas, such as Kyoto, this involves a dance performed by apprentice geisha, after which the apprentices themselves throw packets of roasted soybeans to the crowds. In other areas, priests and invited guests throw packets of roasted soybeans, some wrapped in gold or silver foil, small envelopes with money, sweets, candies and other prizes. In some bigger and more central shrines, celebrities and sumo wrestlers are invited to celebrations, usually to Setsubun events that are televised.[21] At Sensō-ji in the Asakusa neighborhood of Tokyo, crowds of nearly 100,000 people attend the annual festivities.[22]” Location: Antique Japanese Wood Netsuke Setsubun Oni Demon Yokai hit with Inlaid Beans Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE COMBINED SHIPPING: Please check my eBay store to see what else I have listed, as I usually have several similar items listed at the same time. I’ll do my best to combine shipping for buyers of multiple items; often the combined shipping cost will be only a little more than the cost for shipping the largest item in the set. If you buy multiple items from me you can either pay the full shipping cost that eBay calculates and I can refund you the difference from what it actually costs to ship, or you can wait to receive a combined shipping invoice from me before paying. Please contact me in advance if you need a quote for combining, especially for shipping internationally, or when combining larger or heavier items, as the cost for combining might vary. For smaller, lightweight items, the cost to ship additional items should be negligible. For large items I may still need to ship separately. PAYMENT: After winning an item, either through auction, buy-it-now, or best offer, I expect payment within 3 days or a message within those three days indicating when you expect to pay by. If I don’t hear from you within three days I’ll need to mark the item as unpaid, and a few days later if you still haven’t paid the order will be cancelled, and the item relisted (or sold to the next highest bidder). Also, if you win an item and then see that I’ve listed something else you’d like to bid on, feel free to place your bid and then just let me know that you’re still bidding on more items. END DATES, SHIPPING TIMES: My auctions typically start and end on Sunday. I try to mail items out the following business day after they’re paid for, but this depends on when in the day they’re paid for and if I have time to wrap everything and get to the Post Office before they close. My nearby Post Office recently shortened their hours, so I’m now only making two or three Post Office visits each week. I don’t count weekends and Federal Holidays in this shipping timeline, and my imaginary business hours are 9am-5pm (PST). So typically if you pay for an item on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, it will be at my local Post Office by Monday or Tuesday, and if you pay on Monday it will be there on Tuesday or Wednesday. If I’m going to be out of town for just a few days I might adjust this shipping time from more than three days rather than set a Vacation Hold, but this is uncommon. Note that eBay is not my full-time job and I don’t have anyone helping me pack items, so sometimes unexpected delays will happen, but I do try my best to get items out on time (and failing to do so results in penalties from eBay). Please let me know if you need something urgently and I’ll try to make it a priority. SHIPPING ADDRESSES: Please verify that you have the correct shipping address set in your eBay account and your PayPal account. I’d strongly recommend sending me a message with your address just to be sure. REFUNDS & RETURNS: Refunds are given for items that arrive with damage due to shipping. I do my best to protect everything I sell, but much of what I sell is very fragile and the possibility always exists that it might get damaged along the way. If this happens to you, please let me know how bad the damage is (pictures help), and I can either give you a partial refund if you still want to keep the item, or I might request to have you ship it back using the same packaging, and I’ll refund your cost of shipping (both ways), plus the cost of the item. Typically this is all processed by requesting a refund through eBay, but I’d appreciate if you’d send me a message first. Refunds are also given for items you believe I’ve misrepresented, based on condition or otherwise. I do my best to research, describe in detail, and present comprehensive photos of everything I sell, but sometimes I make mistakes, miss a defect, or am not particularly knowledgeable about the item in question. If you receive an item that you aren’t completely happy with, please contact me and we’ll work something out. The last thing I want is for my customers to feel that they’ve been taken advantage of. Order cancellations are possible if I haven’t yet shipped an item out. Returns for other reasons are accepted, but the original shipping cost is not refunded and you’ll need to pay for return shipping. Your return will be processed through eBay, and will be paid once I’ve received the item back in the condition it was sent out in. These fees are meant to discourage excessive or frivolous returns, but if you have a legitimate reason for a return, please let me know and we’ll try to work something out. PACKAGING: Items are typically shipped in large cardboard boxes, wrapped in lots of bubble wrap, and padded with lots of recycled paper. I’ll double box items when possible, but note that it often adds a significant amount of weight to the shipment, which will usually increase your shipping cost. Feel free to send me a message with any additional packaging requests you might have, but note that I can’t always honor them (especially if you’ve already paid for shipping and your request might significantly add to the package weight). SHIPPING COSTS: Shipping is often expensive. The calculated shipping amount that eBay provides is often even more expensive than it should be. If the shipping cost seems excessively expensive, please let me know and I’ll see if I can make you a more reasonable quote based on the USPS.com shipping calculator. Note that the cost of shipping is determined by: * How far it’s going. I’m in Port Hueneme, CA 93041. Shipments within California are cheap, but not so cheap to the East Coast or other countries * How bulky the package is. Typically I ship using the following box sizes: 7”x7”x7”, 12”x12”x8”, or 12”x12”x16”. The size of the box I use will usually need to account for the size of the item, plus 2” to 4” in each direction for packaging. The size of the box usually doesn’t affect the price much, unless if dimensions start going over 12” (within California it doesn’t matter much – bulk away!) * How much the package weighs. USPS First Class within the US needs to be a package weight of less than 1 pound (this used to be 13 oz). USPS First Class International is less than 4 pounds, I think. Note that for small items most of this weight will be due to packaging material. To estimate the package weight, I typically take the weight of the item and then double or triple it. Note that I much prefer to ship using USPS Priority and I will often not use less reliable or slower methods of shipping as options if the price is comparable. I offer USPS First Class within the US only for shipments that weigh less than a pound. I offer USPS First Class International for most countries for shipments weighing less than 4 pounds, but because of lack of tracking and insurance options I may require USPS Priority for more expensive shipments (please contact me if you have any concerns on this). USPS Parcel Post and USPS Ground are usually only used within the US for large, heavy items. Please make sure you select the correct shipping option you’d like when paying. Please feel free to send me any questions about shipping, but keep in mind that it can be expensive, especially for large, fragile items that need to go across the country or the world. Also, please don’t ask me to misrepresent the item cost on your customs shipping forms. I understand that import taxes can be expensive, but I’m not going to mark any items as being less expensive than they actually are, especially since anyone with a computer or cell phone could easily check that price against the old listing. PRICES, BEST OFFERS & VACATION HOLDS: I’ll be honest, I don’t do a lot of research on where to set my prices. I typically list them first at auction at about what I think they might be worth, and if they don’t sell I relist them as Buy-It-Now with Best Offer. After that I’m willing to consider just about anything, but if you think I’m asking way too much on an item, please let me know why rather than just sending me a very low offer (which I might otherwise decline). How much I’m willing to adjust my asking price (if at all) is dependent on a variety of factors such as: how much I like the item, how much it cost me, how long I’ve had it listed, what it’s valued at, what similar items have sold for, and what other buyers have offered for it. Items I’ve had listed for years I’ll typically be happy to accept a lot less on (50% to 75% off), while items that I’ve had listed for just a few days will typically be much closer to my asking price. I review all offers and never auto-decline, but I might decline without a counter-offer if an offer seems outrageously low with no explanation. My store is usually active even when I’m out of town, but I can’t sell or ship anything until I get back. You can still watch items and ask me questions, but if I have an active Vacation Hold in place I’ll have to decline your offers until I get back. If you see I have a Vacation Hold in place, instead of sending me an offer (which I’ll have to decline) please first send me a message with your price and I’ll respond back. If we can agree on a price I’ll let you know when I’ll be active again and I’ll hold the item for you until I get back. ADDITIONAL PHOTOS: eBay has a limit of 12 photos per listing. Usually this isn’t enough to get all the details of an item. Please message me if you’d like additional photos of specific details or angles and I’ll try to accommodate. AUTHENTICITY: Any item details regarding item age, origin, and authenticity are my best guess based on my limited knowledge of antiques and are not guaranteed to be correct. Typically, the more details I give in the description, the more certain I am of the item. On the other hand, if I’m vague in the description, it’s probably because I’m not sure. Please use your best judgement and check the photos. Feel free to send me a message with any concerns and I’ll be happy to chat. If you still aren’t sure on an item, please consider having an expert check it out (I recommend ValueMyStuff.com). And if you receive your item and still have concerns, please let me know. OTHER NOTES: Any items in the background, used for scale, or used to prop up or display the item are not included in the sale unless otherwise specified or requested. Please contact me for any questions regarding the item or shipping, or requests for additional pictures. Also, feel free to contact me if you see something similar to what you want, as I have a lot of inventory that I haven’t listed yet, and I might have what you’re looking for. International buyers – please note: Import duties, taxes, and charges aren’t included in the item price or postage cost. These charges are the buyer’s responsibility. Please check with your country’s customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. Note that customs to the UK in particular tend to be rather high (often around 30% of the item+postage cost). All items ship from Port Hueneme (Zip Code 93041), CA, USA. .
