This is Anthony West’s own copy, bearing his marginal notes and annotations. The book was dedicated to West’s stepfather, Henry Maxwell Andrews “For years of understanding and friendship”. Fascinatingly, West has crossed this out and made the handwritten addition “Neither, as it turned out, understanding nor a friend”. Additionally, the book is signed and inscribed to the front free endpaper “To dearest Chita, from Anthony with affection and love, 29 December ’49”. A very nice example of the first printing of the first edition. 324 pages. Original cloth hardback with original dustwrapper. The dustwrapper is not price clipped, showing the original 10s 6d price to the inside front flap. It is in very attractive condition, with light wear and tear to the edges (see pictures). The book itself is also in very attractive condition with boards and titles remaining bright and light bumping (see pictures). Binding sound and square. A unique item. Anthony Panther West Fairfield (1914-1987) was the son of writers H G Wells and Rebecca West. His mother married Henry Maxwell Andrews in 1930.
