Spodumene is a common mineral, but only in several localities does it occur in transparent gem form. The main gem form of Spodumene is Kunzite, the other is the rarer Hiddenite. Yellow and colorless gem forms of Spodumene also exist, but are not commonly faceted as gemstones. Kunzite has a lovely pink color and is becoming increasingly popular in the gemstone market.Kunzite is a Lithium Aluminum Silicate forming in granite pegmatite (coarse-grained igneous rock) often with other lithium-bearing minerals such as eucryptite, tourmaline, albite and lepidolite. Kunzite frequently occurs as very long, unevenly terminated, flat-sided crystals, often with longitudinal striations. Kunzite was discovered in Brazil in 1877. Kunzite is named after US mineralogist G.F. Kunz in 1902. Kunzite is transparent with a vivid vitreous (glass-like) luster. Kunzite comes in a variety of light hued colors depending on the amount of manganese in the stone – from colorless to yellow, brown, light pink, green or violet. The gem can be found in Afghanistan, USA, Brazil, Madagascar, Mexico, Burma and Sweden and is often found in mines which also herald Beryls and Tourmalines. Kunzite has tiny traces of manganese which creates its famous lilac colour.
